The Darkness Descends on Main Street I don't leave my house much anymore. After getting stabbed investigating a child trafficking operation out west a few years back, I developed severe PTSD and became something of a hermit. But every now and then, I need to brave the great outdoors. Today was one of those days.
As I zipped down to the local Dollar General on my e-scooter, that harsh, institutional brightness hit me first - the fluorescent lights that make everything look slightly poisonous. Then the smell: plastic, cardboard, something vaguely chemical. It was as if the lifeblood of this town had been replaced by soulless consumption.
The Rise of the Corporate Goliath This isn't unique to my town. It's happening across small-town America. Main Street is dying, one boarded-up window at a time. In its place rises the corporate behemoth of Dollar General - a chain that now has over 18,000 locations nationwide, more than any other retailer.
But this isn't just about the loss of local businesses and community identity. There are darker spiritual forces at work. The Bible warns of a time when "the love of many will grow cold" and "the son of destruction" will rise to power (Matthew 24:12, 2 Thessalonians 2:3). Is the soul-crushing spread of Dollar General a harbinger of this prophesied tribulation?
Consuming the American Dream The numbers tell a chilling story. Between 2015 and 2020, over 50% of independent retailers in small towns went out of business. Meanwhile, the number of Dollar General stores skyrocketed by 25%. These corporate giants now control a shocking 75% of the "small-box" retail market.
It's not just Main Street that's dying - it's the American Dream itself. The entrepreneurial spirit that built this nation is being systematically devoured by faceless conglomerates. And at the heart of it all stands Dollar General, consuming communities one by one like a ravenous demonic entity.
A Warning from Scripture The prophet Jeremiah warned of a time when "everyone is greedy for unjust gain" and "from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is corrupt" (Jeremiah 6:13). Could the spread of Dollar General be a fulfillment of this biblical prophecy?
Many believers see the corporate takeover of small-town America as a harbinger of the end times - a sign that the love of money and material things has overtaken the love of God and neighbor. As the soul of our nation is consumed, we must heed the warnings of Scripture and stand firm against the darkness that threatens to engulf us.
"The truth doesn't hide. It waits for those brave enough to look."
