The fluorescent lights hit me first - that harsh, institutional brightness that makes everything look slightly poisonous. Then the smell - plastic, cardboard, chemicals. A vague sense of decay.

This is the new face of America. The corporate machine is devouring our small towns, one "discount" retailer at a time. Main Street is dying, and the soulless Dollar General rises in its place. It's like a plague spreading across the fruited plain, leaving homogeneity and consumption in its wake.
