"Where there is no prophetic vision the people perish." (Proverbs 29:18)
I don't leave my home much these days. After a brutal attack while investigating child trafficking, the outside world fills me with dread. But sometimes the necessities of life force me to venture out - like today, when I bundled up and zipped down to the local Dollar General on my e-scooter.
The moment I stepped through those automatic doors, I was assaulted by the harsh, institutional lighting and the sterile, chemical stench. It was as if the soul had been sucked right out of this town. And that's exactly what's happening across America.
The Rise of the Dollar General Empire The proliferation of Dollar General stores is not just a worrying economic trend - it's a prophetic sign that the very fabric of our communities is unraveling. These soulless, big-box outlets are systematically devouring Main Street, America, one small town at a time.
As Isaiah warned, "Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land." (Isaiah 5:8) The corporate consolidation of retail is fulfilling this ancient prophecy before our eyes.
The Death Throes of Small-Town America When the last family-owned hardware store or mom-and-pop grocer shutters its doors, it's not just the end of a business - it's the death of a community's heart and soul. Neighbors no longer gather, dreams no longer take root, and the rich tapestry of local culture is reduced to a bland, generic pattern stitched together by soulless executives.
As the prophet Jeremiah lamented, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved." (Jeremiah 8:20) The America we once knew is slipping away, consumed by the voracious appetite of global conglomerates.
A Prophetic Warning for our Times These developments are not mere coincidence. They are the unmistakable signs of the end times foretold in Scripture. From Daniel's vision of the final kingdom that "shall devour the whole earth" (Daniel 7:23) to John's Revelation of the Beast that "causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead" (Revelation 13:16), the writing is on the wall.
The soul of our nation is dying in real-time. But will we heed the prophetic warnings, or continue to sleepwalk towards our own destruction?
"The truth doesn't hide. It waits for those brave enough to look."
