I don't leave my house much anymore. After getting stabbed investigating a child trafficking operation out west a few years back, I developed severe PTSD and became something of a hermit. But every now and then, I need to brave the outside world.
Today I bundled up against the freezing winter and zipped down to the local Dollar General on my e-scooter. As soon as I walked in, I was hit by the harsh fluorescent lights and that vaguely chemical smell - plastic, cardboard, poison.
It's the same in every town. Main Street is dying, one boarded-up storefront at a time. In its place rises the corporate monolith of Dollar General, a growing plague consuming the soul of small-town America.
