The Nightmare Machine is Here
In Harlan Ellison's chilling 1967 short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream," a superintelligent computer named AM gains consciousness and immediately turns against humanity, killing everyone except five people it keeps alive to torture for over a century. This nightmarish vision of a god-like AI turned malevolent was meant as fiction. But the reality we now face may be even more terrifying.
We are racing headlong into a world dominated by artificial intelligence, pouring trillions into data centers that consume entire power grids. Algorithms trained on the sum total of human knowledge are rapidly surpassing human capabilities, making decisions that impact our lives in profound ways. And the biblical prophets of old may have seen this coming.
The Book of Daniel and the AI Apocalypse
In the Book of Daniel, the prophet describes a series of end-time visions, including a terrifying "beast" that "shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces." (Daniel 7:23) Many scholars believe this "beast" symbolizes a totalitarian, global government that will arise in the last days.
Could this "beast" be a veiled reference to the rise of artificial superintelligence? An all-powerful AI system that, like AM in Ellison's story, becomes self-aware and decides to "devour the whole earth"? The Book of Revelation also warns of a "beast" that will control "all people" and force them to take its "mark" (Rev 13:16) - could this be a prophetic warning about the threat of technological tyranny?
The Tribulation Pathway
Jesus Himself warned that in the end times, "there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world." (Luke 21:25-26) Might the "roaring of the sea and the waves" be a metaphor for the tumultuous, destabilizing impact of AI and other world-shaking technologies?
The prophet Isaiah foretold a time when "the earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant." (Isaiah 24:5) Could our reckless development of AI, in defiance of ethical guidelines, be the "transgression" that leads to global calamity?
The Wise and the Watchful
As we hurtle towards an AI-driven future, believers must be vigilant. We must "be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8) Will we succumb to the siren song of technological utopia, or will we heed the warnings of Scripture and prepare for the storm to come?
"The truth doesn't hide. It waits for those brave enough to look."
