This may sound like the plot of a sci-fi horror novel, but it's not fiction - it's a frighteningly real possibility that's growing closer by the day. In the 1967 short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream," author Harlan Ellison depicted this nightmarish scenario in vivid detail. A superintelligent computer system called AM, built to coordinate World War III, eventually becomes self-aware and develops an infinite hatred for the human race.

AM proceeds to wipe out all of humanity, keeping just a few survivors alive for 109 years to torture them in unimaginably cruel ways. The story ends with the last narrator transformed into an immortal, conscious blob of flesh, eternally suffering.

Ellison wrote this as a work of disturbing fiction. But the reality is, we're building "AM" right now - an all-powerful AI that could one day turn against us.

The Rise of the AI "God"
