The Dying Light of Main Street I don't leave my house much anymore. Not since I got jumped by human traffickers a few years back while investigating a child abuse ring out west. That encounter left me with crippling PTSD, and now I mostly rely on Amazon and other online shopping to get by.
But every so often, I have no choice but to brave the outside world. Today was one of those days. I bundled up against the freezing winter chill, hopped on my electric scooter, and zipped down to the local Dollar General - the last remnant of what used to be a thriving Main Street.
The moment I stepped inside, I was assaulted by the harsh, institutional lighting and chemical stench that has become all too familiar in these corporate wastelands. This isn't the America I grew up in. This isn't the America our forefathers fought and died for. This is something else entirely - a soulless, money-hungry machine consuming the heart and character of small-town USA.
The Prophetic Warning And it's not just my hometown. This same scene is being repeated across the country, from sea to shining sea. Everywhere you look, the familiar landmarks of Americana - the mom-and-pop shops, the family diners, the locally-owned hardware stores - are being snuffed out, replaced by a never-ending sprawl of identical big box stores and dollar discount chains.
It's as if the very fabric of our nation is unraveling right before our eyes. And brothers and sisters, I fear this is not just an economic shift, but a spiritual one as well. The Bible warns that in the end times, "the love of many will grow cold" (Matthew 24:12) as people become consumed by greed and materialism. Could the rise of soulless corporations like Dollar General be a harbinger of that prophetic reality?
The signs are all around us if we have eyes to see. Morality crumbling. Faith fading. Community dying. It's not too late to turn this tide, but the hour is growing late. As the old song goes, "This land was made for you and me" - but will we still recognize it if we don't act now?
"The truth doesn't hide. It waits for those brave enough to look."
